Disc Golf at Songer Whitewater

When I manage to get out of the office and into the outdoors, one of my favorite laid back activities is disc golf. Also known as frisbee golf, this sport is played similar to the origional golf sport with some obvious differences. Instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a disc into a metal basket. Simple, right....wrong. This sport is most definitely just as frustrating as the "other" golf.

While many folks are still unfamiliar with the sport of disc golf, it is growing at a faster rate than nearly any other sport in the United States. Songer Whitewater is home to the only 18 hole disc golf course Southern West Virginia. To find the next closest one, you'd have to go two hours in any direction (Huntington, WV to the West, Clarksburg, WV to the North, and Blacksburg, VA to the Southeast).

Our course is known for being laid back, challenging, rough off of the fairways, and a lot of fun. We have a variety of quirks, such as an eight foot tall basket (instead of a typical 4 foot height) and a basket that hangs from cam straps between two trees (instead of resting atop a pole).

Many of the local river guides come to play after their rafting trips return from the New or Gauley Rivers. They hit up the Songer Outfitter shop for supplies such as our full line of Innova Discs, Gatorade, Red Bull, or a 12-pack of beer (a particular favorite amongst the guides).

To find a course near you, go to http://www.pdga.com/ and check out the course directory.

Below I've posted a couple of photos from some recent rounds on the course.
